Strings Music Courses
AMS1OI: Grade 9 Strings - Experienced
Students with previous strings experience, either in elementary school or private lessons, develop their musicianship through playing as a group, alone, or in small ensembles, and study music theory and history.
AMS1OX: Grade 9 Strings - Beginner
Students, without previous experience are introduced to a string instrument, e.g. violin, viola, cello, or double bass. As in the experienced courses, students will develop their skills through playing as a group, alone, or in small ensembles, and will study music theory and history.
AMS2OI: Grade 10 Strings
Students will continue to develop string instrument techniques (vibrato, shifting, bowing), and will increase their understanding of theory, music history, style, and interpretation of music. Participation in the orchestra is encouraged. AMS1OI or AMS1OX highly recommended.
AMS3MI: Grade 11 Strings
A continuation of AMS2OI that builds on students' individual playing skills on their string instrument, as well as musicianship and theory and history studies. Studies focus on violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Participation in orchestra is highly encouraged. AMS2OI is a prerequisite.
AMS4MI: Grade 12 Strings
This senior level strings course prepares students for post- secondary studies in music. University bound students can use this credit as one of the 6 required for admission. AMS3MI is a prerequisite.
Integrated Arts Options
The Integrated Arts Program is an enriched Arts magnet program, designed for students who wish to specialize in the Arts: Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, Production Technologies, Vocal music, Instrumental (band) music, or Strings. There is a separate supplementary registration package and an audition that needs to be completed in order to be eligible for this program. These are enriched comprehensive courses including added solo and small ensemble performance expectations, and one-on-one lessons with guest professional musicians.
