Instrumental Music Courses

The following courses are meant for students who would like to focus on a concert band instrument listed below while developing musical skills and appreciation.  

Concert Band Instruments

  • Flute

  • Oboe

  • Clarinet, Bass Clarinet

  • Bassoon

  • Alto, Tenor, Baritone Saxophone

  • French Horn

  • Trumpet

  • Trombone

  • Baritone/Euphonium

  • Tuba

  • Percussion:  Drummers must learn all percussion family instruments:  ie.  Mallets, Concert Snare/Bass Drum, Cymbals, Timpani, Mallets, Auxillary)

AMI1OX:  Grade 9 Instrumental Music -  Beginner: This course is designed to teach beginner level concert band music.  It is also designed to develop reading skills for students with experience, but do not know how to read sheet music.

AMI1OI:  Grade 9 Instrumental Music - Experienced:  In this fun class, students will develop their chosen instrument skills within full band, small ensemble, and individual settings.  Students will participate in engaging activities that develop self-confidence, creativity, imagination, and leadership.  Essential theory and music technology is covered to provide the tools for students to write their own music.  At least one year experience on the student’s chosen instrument is highly recommended.

AMI2OI:  Grade 10 Instrumental Music:  (designed as a continuation of AMI1OI) Students will develop their chosen instrument skills within full band, small ensemble, and individual settings. At least one year experience on the student’s chosen instrument is highly recommended.  Essential theory and technology is covered with composition as the focus. Students will participate in fun, engaging activities that develop self-confidence, creativity, historical knowledge, imagination, and leadership.  AMI1OI is highly recommended.

AMI3MI:  Grade 11 Instrumental Music:  This senior music course is the next sequential step to achieving musical mastery on the student’s chosen instrument(s). Students will further develop creative and performance skills in large group, small ensemble and individual settings.  Music from various eras and styles will be performed and studied. (Prerequisite: AMI1OI or AMI2OI)

AMU4MI:  Grade 12 Instrumental Music (University/College Prep):  This course emphasizes the performance and study of music from various eras and styles. Students develop their interpretive and performance skills in the band.  University bound students can use this credit as one of the 6 required for admission. (Prerequisite: AMI3MI)

Integrated Arts Options

The Integrated Arts Program is designed for students who wish to specialize in the Arts: dance, drama, visual arts, vocal music, instrumental band, instrumental,
strings and production technology. There is a separate supplementary registration package and an audition that needs to be completed to be eligible for this program. Click here for additional information about the requirements and audition process or call 743-8265 for more information. Only students in the IAP(enriched) may choose courses that end with a (Y).

AMI1OY:  Grade 9 Instrumental Music: Enriched students will have an extra solo and ensemble performance expectation as well as private lessons with a professional musician. Students will develop their chosen instrument skills within full band, small ensemble, and individual settings.  Students will participate in engaging activities that develop self-confidence, creativity, imagination, and leadership.  Essential theory and music technology is covered to provide the tools for students to write their own music.
